Located 200 kilometers northeast of Mandalay, on the railway towards Lashio. Hsipaw Township is an administrative unit under Kyaukme District in Shan State, eastern Myanmar. It is a picturesque town on the bank of Myitnge River renowned for bustling markets and interesting local lives. A charming and laid-back town located high in the hills of Shan State, Hsipaw’s dusty streets, traditional buildings, and trekking opportunities are worth the effort of getting. The Central Market at Hsipaw is one of the best markets to visit in all of Myanmar. Shans, Kachins, and other tribals come here to trade regularly. According to Myanmar’s history, Hsipaw is probably the most notable, wealthiest and powerful, along with Keng Tung and Nyaung Shwe. Vestiges of these golden days can be found at the residence of the last Shan Prince.

however, you can only look at the palace from outside. Hsipaw is famous for the Bowgoy Pagoda, situated in Bowgoy Village about 6 miles far from Hsipaw. Also, do not miss the chance of getting to Hsipaw’s largest religious building, also one of its busiest and crowded religious sites - Mahamyatmuni Paya. Then you can trek further into the villages surrounding Hsipaw town by walking or by cycling with bicycles. Nawng Kaw Gyi Lake, Nam Hu Nwe Waterfall and Hot Springs are more options to explore around Hsipaw. The real highlights lie just a few minutes out of town, when walking close to the banks of the Dutawaddy River, passing amongst fields rich in crops and local fruits. If this is not enough, further highlights include river cruises, remote Shan monastery and village visits, trekking and even cycling through the almost unworldly picturesque countryside that surrounds Hsipaw. As tourists often get into Hsipaw from Mandalay, available transportation options are taxi, private car, bus or train. Especially, when accessing the town by train, you are guaranteed to contemplate the beauty of Goteik Viaduct, a construction of hundred years old which is Myanmar’s highest railway bridge.
