KENTUNG(KYAING TON)

Kengtung is a capital town of Kengtung District in the Shan State of Myanmar. The name means, “Walled City of Tung.” It is bounded on the east by the Mekong River and west in a general way by the Salween River, though it overlaps it in some places. Kengtung is the largest, most mountainous, most easterly, and culturally the farthest from the Burmese, of all the Shan States. About 63% of the area lies in the basin of the Mekong River and 37% in the Salween drainage area. The town is surrounded by a brick wall and moat about 5 miles (8.0 km) round. The very factor which gave Kengtung its romantic quality is its remoteness from any other big center of civilization and its situation as a courtyard into which the backdoors of four different countries. The Shan hills surrounding Kyaingtong are home to a variety of ethnic tribes including Khun, Ann, Wa, Shan, Akha, Palaung and Lahu villages who all have their own traditions, lifestyle, language, way of dress, religions.
